The Futility of Canadian-Chinese Trade Diplomacy

PREVIEW FOR LATER: GUEST CHARLES BURTON. Charles Burton critiques Mark Carney's trade mission to Beijing, noting it mirrors past failures. Despite attempts to ignore human rights to boost trade, historical precedent shows Canada's market share declined under similar strategies. This mission aims to offset tariff uncertainties and Trump-era trade pressures.

This is John Batchel. Colleague Charles Burton, author of The Beaver and the Dragon, the story, the

0:06.3

backstory, the complete sweep of the story of the People's Republic of China and trade with Canada.

0:12.6

Now Mr. Carney and Beijing is looking to open the door for trade between Canada and China, meaning

0:19.3

China will buy from Canada and Canada will buy from China.

0:22.8

But Charles offers the history of this expectation, hope, wish.

0:28.2

What comes next is disappointment, at least if this follows the historical record.

Charles Burton on Mark Carney's mission to Beijing, handshake with Xi Jinping.

And then more of this tonight.

I think, you know, I think he's making the mistake that Jean-Cretchen, our former prime minister,

0:47.4

1993 to 2003 made, which is that if you treat the Chinese nicely, if you don't talk about human rights, and at the time,

0:56.5

Mr. Kraychan said, well, you can't tell the Premier of Alberta or Saskatchewan what to do,

1:01.5

how can he advise the Chinese regime on these matters, and massive trade missions sending, you know,

1:09.0

most of the cabinet and most of the primers and hundreds of

1:13.1

business people to China to try and engender good feelings, which would result in greater

1:20.8

market share for Canada in the Chinese market. This efforts by Mr. Kraychan failed because

1:26.8

statistically Canada's market share under the Kraychan era declined, despite all of the holding back on criticism of Chinese regime behavior or taking, indeed, taking action against it.

1:38.7

So it seems Mr. Carney may be following the same route as Mr. Craychon without being aware that the historical

1:47.2

precedent is that this will not bring about the desired result for Canada, which is to have a

1:53.0

massive increase of sales into China to compensate for the negative outcome of the tariffs policies and the uncertainty in the business

2:03.8

environment because of Mr. Trump's statements on the free trade agreement.
