I'm John Bachelors. It's a great pleasure to speak to Professor Bill Talbman of Amherst College.

And his brother, Philip Talbman, have published a new book, McNamara at War that has a lot of information we've not had before.

A lot. About the Kennedys, about the johnsons about macnamara's time in the

pentagon and afterwards a new history you bet you go see university of california at berkeley

uh i believed is that the golden bears i'm not sure i think it is yes yes and uh does not go to

stanford good for him, good choice.

And he gets an excellent education, and he's very successful.

And then he makes a decision to go to the Harvard Business School.

That was brand new.

There was very little attention to business being turned into a PhD or something you study.

Why did he choose HBS?

Well, first of all, I want to just say that at Berkeley, he was one of three students in a class of 3,000 who were initiated into 5 Beta Kappa in his junior year. So he was brilliant. He goes to Harvard

Business School, having been turned down,

I should say, for a road scholarship. He picks Harvard because it's Harvard, but also because he

has the sense that he's majored in economics at Berkeley and as a whiz at mathematics, and he thinks

that business may be what he wants to do.

But he has a broad view of business.

He wants to combine, as he emphasizes over and over again, he wants to combine sort of the service

to a particular firm or entity with service to the world, to the nation and the world.

That's his idea, that it's a big mistake for a businessman to focus entirely on profits.

A businessman who is open to the world and in service to the world is the kind of man he wants to be.

And at Harvard Business School, he turns out to be number one in his class.
