I'm John Datsu with my good colleague, Jonathan Shanzer, the executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracy. He's traveling. And we go to Syria because within these last days, an incident called Blue on Green when it was Afghanistan, is alarming in that it is inarticulate.

What we know is a member of the so-called security detail in Damascus,

opened fire at a meeting attended by two members of the Iowa National Guard and their interpreter.

The man who did the shooting is now also dead was said to be

al-Qaeda, but this is all inarticulate and exact because the government itself in Damascus

headed by Al-Shara is al-Qaeda. It's al-Qaeda's veteran. I'm confused by this, and then came the claim that the

shooter must be ISIS. This is meant to be foggier, not easier on understanding. Jonathan, can we

sort this out? Because everything that happened, blue-on-green, is exactly what has been a major

worry as Israel deals with Damascus.

Oh, John, this is absolutely murky. I'm not sure I would call it blue on green. I would call it

black on green, black representing al-Qaeda or ISIS, depending on who we're going to blame for

this attack. But this took place outside of the town of Palmyra,

which was a place where there was significant Al-Qaeda and ISIS activity

during the Syrian Civil War.

The exact circumstances of this are still a bit murky.

We certainly understand that two American servicemen and a civilian

contractor were killed. The immediate blame was placed on the Islamic State. But here's where I think it gets very murky, John. The Nusra front, or HTS, as we're calling it, the basis of the current Al-Sharah government in Syria

for a time was actually a partner with the Islamic State. And I think that there are certainly

going to be many instances where members of Al-Qaeda also identify with the Islamic State.

So in other words, members of the security forces of the current government have either worked with the Islamic State. So in other words, members of the security forces of the current government have either

worked with the Islamic State or still have a certain affinity for the Islamic State.

It's going to be impossible to weed out jihadists from the ranks of this government

...
