I'm John Batchelor, to Europe, and the challenge of the Ukraine contest,

at the same time dealing with the European Union's ambitions for 2026 for all of its members,

but especially the engines, the big three, Berlin,

Paris, and London, London being asterisk member of the EU. We begin, however, with the headlines

on Ukraine. This is the Financial Times, the peer equal to Wall Street Journal, and yet it has no dog in the fight,

which is why I depend upon when it comes to American politics,

which are everywhere in this headline.

Russia will shift forces to NATO border if Ukraine deal struck Finland warns.

The subhead to explain Finnish Prime Minister,

you will recall Finland is a new member of NATO,

calls for more money for frontline states

ahead of the first summit of countries bordering Russia.

Judy Dempsey of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

joins me from Berlin.

She's a senior scholar.

The need here is to interpret a headline that sounds extremely auspicious of bad days ahead.

It's impossible to tell from this distance because we have the filter of Washington.

And you will recall the general understanding is that all American foreign policy

is an expression of domestic policy.

That is, our president's think first of the vote before they think of their commitment to their allies.
