To the south of France, to paradise,

to my good colleague,

Simon Constable, writing for Barrens

in the Wall Street Journal and other

distinguished publications. But right now, Simon is a weather station to improve the outlook for

here in southern New England, where we're in a deep freeze. The numbers are staggeringly low,

given that we're not even wintertime yet. We've been in the teens when we're lucky, below teens at 5 a.m.

I greet the day with the spaniels ready to go out into that frigid temperature.

There's snow on the ground. It can't melt as long as the temperature is down.

This is coming from Siberia, so I don't blame anybody in Canada.

Come straight over Ottawa and bang, hits New England. Simon, I'm about to feel envy.

How is your weather, Simon? Good day to you. Good day, dear, John. It is considerably warm for

autumn, or fall, as you call it in America.

So this morning was 49 Fahrenheit when I got up and the high was 57, which is absolutely

delightful.

And I've been taking Lyra and Juno out without each of them having a coat on them to keep warm because they don't need it.

And they've been enjoying the lack of rain that we've had over the last few days,

which is absolutely delightful.
