one side of the other. However, what we have in the South Pacific is concern. Australia is the

anchor of the defense of the South Pacific democracies and those states that are

allied with the United States and European states.

At the same time, China is ambitious.

Within these last days, we were told that China fired a ballistic missile, an ICBM ballistic

missile, downrange from the South China Sea where the boomer, the Chinese

missile boat, was located as goes to the report, downrange in the general direction of the

Solomon Islands in Fiji. The route that it passed may have included the Philippine airspace,

may have included Japanese airspace, certainly covered Palau, the Marshall Islands, and Northern Mariana's downrange.

Why I bring this episode up is that China's reminding all of us that the South Pacific is not secure,

that Australia has been asked to do a great deal since the Second War to secure it,

and that while it is first raid, it is troubled by developments.
