Here on Pints with Jack, we're reading our way through the works of C.S. Lewis.

I'm Father Andrew, and I'm joined, as always, by my co-hosts, David and Matt.

This season, we find ourselves among the stars, reading through the first of

C.S. Lewis's science fiction trilogy out of the silent planet. In today's chapter, Weston's

philosophy of life is articulated with its greatest clarity, thanks chiefly to ransom. In today's

text, we'll hear what it is that Weston wants and what price

he is willing to pay, and what price he is willing others to pay in pursuit of his dream.

We have several choices for today's episode title. Since Ransom spends much of the chapter

translating, we could have gone with

The Interpreter, a 2005 movie starring Nicole Kidman, who I understand is a Lewis fan. Good movie.

And starring Nicole Kidman, an interpreter at the United Nations who overhears an assassination

plot. The classic 1996 movie Independence Day starring Will Smith was also a contender,

but we put it to a vote in the Slack Channel, and the winner was War of the Worlds,

a movie about planetary colonization, originally made in 1953, and most recently remade in 2005
