Welcome, everyone. Here on Pints with Jack, we are reading our way through the works of C.S. Lewis.

My opening quotation for this episode comes from the preface of mere Christianity, and my reason for selecting

this passage should become a little clearer as we hear about the genesis of the book,

which we'll be discussing in a moment, because today my interview is with returning guests to

the show Dr. David C.

Downing. Over the course of the next hour, I'm going to be picking Dr. Downing's brain about what we

need to know in order to get the most out of our reading of Out of the Silent Planet, as well as the

other books in the series. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, Dr. David C. Downing is a

graduate from Westmont

College, and he earned his PhD from UCLA. He is co-director with his wife, Crystal, of the

Marin E. Wade Center at Wheaton College in Illinois, and he is co-host of their podcast. He has

written several books on Lewis, including a biography, Most Reluctant Convert, a novel about the Inklings,

Looking for the King, a study of Lewis's reading in Christian mysticism, into the region of

all, as well as the book which we'll be talking about today, Planets in Peril, a critical study

of C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy. Dr. David C. Downing, welcome back to Pites with Jack.
