Summary

The 1994 German Grand Prix was a memorable weekend for F1 on track, in the paddock and even in the pitlane. Glenn Freeman is joined by Edd Straw and longtime F1 journalist Tony Dodgins – who was at Hockenheim that weekend – to discuss everything from Ferrari’s first win since 1990, Jos Verstappen’s terrifying pitstop fire, and Benetton’s mysterious ‘Option 13’ driver aids controversy.

We also look back at the latest rule changes introduced ahead of the race - including the debut of the 'plank' under the cars, tension behind the scenes at Ferrari as the Jean Todt era took hold, plus how the ban Mika Hakkinen picked up from this race potentially changed how he raced for the rest of his career.

Yet that was only one of the huge storylines that played out over a baking hot summers weekend at Hockenheim.

Off track, there was plenty of

controversy, as ever in 1994, and in the pit lane there was horror, as everyone's fears about

seconds. Joining me, Glenn Freeman, to look back on an unforgettable weekend in F1 history. I read

0:57.0

opening question. So when you think back to the 1994 German Grand Prix, what's the first thing

1:03.7

that comes to mind? Well, first off, Glenn, thanks for having me on the programme. It's great

1:08.3

to be on. And when I remember that weekend,

1:12.1

the thing that stands out for me is Ross Braun's Friday press conference after the,

1:17.9

you know, investigation into the electronics on the, the Benison from Imola. That's the first thing.

1:23.5

And then the second thing, obviously those, you know, the images and the reality of that pit fire,

1:29.7

it was shocking at the time. You know, people had predicted from the return of refueling that it

1:34.5

was inevitably going to happen somewhere. And there we were, sort of a few months down the line,

1:38.6

and there it was. And it was sort of fairly horrifying at the time. Yeah, we're going to get into

1:43.1

both of those in quite a lot of detail. Certainly, there was a lot to say about what Benetton was up to, like I said earlier, as ever in 1994. But Ed, given how many of your favourite unfancyed teams scored points in this race, dare I ask what your overriding memory is? Yeah, it's the same as that of any right-thinking F-1 fan,

2:01.9

which is a glorious day for the two great French teams.

1:58.4

Double podium for Lilliers, Olivier Pannis, second, Eric Bernard III, and a season when it hadn't scored any points before. Eric Coma, six for LaRousse, LaRouc's last points. The only disappointment was it wasn't two LaRoucés in the points, given Olivier Beretta was seventh. But I'm sure we're going to spend most of the episode talking about those two topics specifically.

2:02.8

So I'll stop there. Leruces in the points given Olivier Beretta was seventh. But I'm sure we're going to spend most of the
