The duality of the modern day web sleuth.

If you're involved in true crime, you can't help but have at least heard of the word.

A noun that comes from the old Norse slew, SLO, meaning trail.

And the verb form meaning, to act as a detective or to investigate, was recorded as early as 1905.

We've recently witnessed the surprise success of amateur web sleuths in the crime world,

perhaps most recently with the 2019 docu-series Don't F with Cats,

in which a data analyst for a casino and another ordinary member of the public

used their admittedly impressive amateur detective skills to track down who would turn out to be

the infamous killer, Luca Magnata.

But we've also seen amateur sluice get it wrong.

Before we jump back to New Year's Day, 1963, I want to bring our attention to another

case that occurred 40 years after, on the other side of the world, the Boston Marathon

bombing of 2013.

On April 15, 2013, in the town of Boston, Massachusetts, three people were killed and at least

264 were injured.

Right as the marathon runners were crossing the finish line, two bombs exploded 12 seconds

apart near Boylston Street.

The first of the two explosions rocks the sidewalk along the course.
