My name is Kristen, and I am so excited to finish First Timothy

with you today.

Today in chapter 6, Paul will instruct Timothy to hold on tight, to hold on tight to sound doctrine,

to fight the good fight of faith, and to the eternal life God's promised in Christ. It makes me think of water skiing or wakeboarding

where he need to hold on for dear life to the rope that connects you to the boat. Only

by holding on to this rope would he be safely able to navigate the waves of

false doctrine that would try to knock him off course. What knocks a believer off course?

Paul talks about false doctrine and greed.

He warns against taking an unhealthy interest in disputes and arguments of our words.

These disputes create division and constant disagreements, the opposite

of what the church strives for, unity among believers. Somehow these false teachings

were twisting the pursuit of godliness into a pursuit of material gain.

Paul warns against the temptation of greed in today's chapter, calling the love of money the root of all evil, a trap that causes people to plunge into ruin and destruction.

But this isn't the only place in the Bible that warns against greed.

Paul actually quotes Ecclesiasties' father. the Bible that warns against greed.

Paul actually quotes Ecclesiasties 510 which says,
