All right, friends, as we have studied First Timothy so far, do you see why it's one of the pastoral

epistles? Paul, a pastor, an apostle, is shepherding Timothy as he shepherds the church

in Ephesus. Paul has instructed issues within the church gathering,

has encouraged Timothy's heart, and today we will see Paul equip Timothy with caring for two

specific populations, widows and elders.

But before he jumps in to address those two groups of people, Paul reminds Timothy to treat the

members of his church as what they are, family, brothers and sisters in Christ. When all the disagreement is

stripped away, when the sin is peeled back, when the temperature of division is

turned down, we are united. We are united to Christ, made righteous by his blood and adopted

into God's family, and we are united with one another, all people whom Jesus bought with his own blood.

In light of that unifying truth Paul says,

don't rebuke an older man but exhort him as a father,
