Tiffany here, and today we start yet another new book.

We are making our way through the Old Testament, and we now come to the rather well-known and often quoted book of Proverbs.

As always, we will take a few minutes to set up the context of the book, and then we will look at chapters 1 and 2 specifically.

Since we are on a chronological journey this year, we want to remember that Solomon has been established as King, and God has made him the wisest man on earth.

In 1 Kings 4, we read that Solomon wrote thousands of Proverbs and songs.

Over the past two days, we studied the song of songs, and today we begin a week in the Proverbs.

God imparted great wisdom to Solomon, which the Holy Spirit then used to pen this collection of Wisdom Literature.

Solomon wrote the majority of the Proverbs, but we will also read several written by men named Agger and Lemuel later on in our journey.

As we study this Wisdom Literature, it's helpful to know what that even means.

The major distinction is that Wisdom Literature is not law.

God's law, His commands, ordinances, and statutes, are found in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy.

Wisdom Literature pertains to instruction for practical matters of life.

In essence, it's a common sense built from the foundation of the law.

This instruction enables us to follow the law as faithful followers of Christ.

It's important to note that Proverbs are not absolute promises.

When a Proverb says you will have health when you fear the Lord, it doesn't mean you will never face sickness.
