Today, our journey takes us to the book of Ecclesiastes.

Over the past few days, we've read about Solomon's established kingdom and how it grew in might and wealth.

We've also studied the many proverbs he wrote through the direction of the Holy Spirit and God's gift of wisdom.

That wisdom is on display in Ecclesiastes as well.

Over the next three days, we will study this book, which in general isn't very uplifting or hopeful when we first read it.

But hope is there, my friends, and Solomon's thoughts on life will remind us that true satisfaction comes from the Lord.

So let's take a look at a little context before we dive into Ecclesiastes chapters 1 through 4.

The majority of scholars believe Solomon was the author of this book.

There are some who believe it could have been another king later in Judas history, but based on the internal evidence of the book and the references to great wisdom,

Solomon, the wisest man in history, is widely accepted as the author.

In chapter 1 verse 1, he calls himself the teacher or preacher, son of David, King of Jerusalem.

Though this book was likely written in the later part of Solomon's reign when his heart was being turned toward idle worship,

God's gift of wisdom enabled him to see the futility of anything apart from God.

He realized that true satisfaction only came from the Lord when so many selfish pursuits brought him no joy.

We place Ecclesiastes here in our journey before we come to the end of Solomon's reign and life in just a few days.
