Tiffany here and our chapters today in 2 Samuel 11 and 12 are truly sad as we see David's life take a very sinful turn.

This man, who had been called a man after God's heart, gives into temptation, which then leads to a deadly snowball of sin.

But even in this situation, we will see God at work.

We will see consequences for David's actions, but we will also see the beauty of restoration and forgiveness in Psalms 32 and 51.

If you think back to just a couple of days ago, we read about Israel's war with the Ammonites and First Chronicles.

And in First Chronicles 20 verse 1, we read that in the spring when kings go to war, David stayed home and sent Joab to besiege the Ammonites at Rabah.

We find the same information here in 2 Samuel 111.

But where First Chronicles 20 continued in the explanation of Joab's siege and Ammon's eventual fall, here in 2 Samuel we zoom in and see what David was doing while he stayed home.

David should have been at war with his army, but instead he remained in Jerusalem and one night while walking on the roof of his palace, he looked down and saw Bathsheba bathing.

Now, there are some parts of this scene that likely sound odd to our 21st century years.

Why was David walking on the roof of his palace or Bathsheba bathing on hers?

How could David even see her? All very valid questions.

And that is where an understanding of Jerusalem in this time period is helpful.

Don't forget that Jerusalem was on a mountain.

David's palace was situated at a high point, so from his roof he could see most of the city.

People also lived in close proximity to one another to provide protection from attack.
