| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome back to Drilled. I'm Andy Westervelt. This season, we are going through the book |
| 0:08.8 | Climate Obstruction, a Global Assessment. I know that sounds very dry, but every chapter compiles |
| 0:16.8 | all of the peer-reviewed research on climate destruction of some kind or another. |
| 0:23.4 | So we have gone through lots of examples. |
| 0:26.6 | We've looked at media and the PR industry and the psychology of misinformation |
| 0:30.6 | and how this works at the local level and the global level |
| 0:34.7 | and what different industries do in particular and how this shows up |
| 0:39.3 | even in the UNF, triple C and COP and the IPCC and all of that. And today, we are looking at how it |
| 0:47.8 | shows up around adaptation. So this is really interesting to me because actually the bulk of the |
| 0:53.8 | research on climate |
| 0:54.5 | obstruction has really looked at how different industries and actors have blocked climate |
| 1:00.2 | policy that gets at mitigation. So reducing emissions, getting off of fossil fuels, transitioning |
| 1:08.1 | away from the things that generate greenhouse gas emissions. |
| 1:13.8 | Adaptation refers to things like building seawalls or feeding cows seaweed or any number of other |
| 1:22.7 | things that people are looking at as ways that we can deal with the climate impacts that are |
| 1:27.2 | already baked in. |
| 1:28.3 | So whether it is moving people out of harm's way, or it is building adaptations, things like that, |
| 1:36.3 | a lot of people are looking at how to protect communities from the extreme weather events that we know are coming no matter what. |
| 1:50.0 | And you would think that that would be kind of a non-controversial form of climate action, |
| 1:56.7 | that, you know, no matter what your disagreements might be about what's causing this problem or how to stop it, that surely you would want to protect your community from severe weather |
| 2:05.0 | events, fires, storms, floods, what have you. |
| 2:08.3 | But in fact, no, there is obstruction happening at the adaptation level as well. |
