Summary

In this year’s first episode of Arrivée, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe review the action from Milan-Sanremo aka La Classicissima.

Would Tadej Pogačar continue where he left off at Paris-Nice last weekend? Could Van Aert and Van der Poel thwart him? And would Lionel reprise the foccacia-in-cappuccino dunking ritual premiered at last year’s Giro d’Italia?

He's got the hand gestures. He's been there 24 hours and he's got the hand gestures.

Daniel, I have descended the podgeo like a stone and I am in an apartment in Sanremo just near to the roundabout where they kind of go across and into the Verooma.

0:42.0

How did you turn on the bike?

0:46.0

Not today, I descended in the Cycling Podcast Brumwagon, driven by Simon Gill, our friend of the photographer.

0:53.0

I am in an apartment owned by a very good friend of the podcast, Alessio Poonzy, a big cycling fan, Cycling Podcast listener.

1:03.0

He offered us the use of his apartment last year as we were coming to cover Melan Sanremo on that occasion we weren't.

1:10.0

This year I thought I'd take him up on his very kind offer. Thank you very much, Alessio. He's actually away at the moment so we are in the heart of Sanremo, probably could have stayed here and listened to the finish line commentary all afternoon because we're that close to the finish line.

1:26.0

But we didn't do that myself, Simon Gill and Herbie Sykes who was joining us to make a friend of the podcast episode which will be out shortly.

1:34.0

We went up to the podgeo and just took it all in. I've ridden the podgeo before, most recently on Thursday but I have ridden it before.

1:42.0

But this was my first experience of Melan Sanremo live and in the flesh.

1:48.0

All, narrowly, because I guess the post-race, the winners press conferences probably possibly going on as we speak.

1:55.0

Up until a few years ago I would have said it was a shame that you weren't at the winners press conference purely because the venue line takes place in the Ariston Theatre where the most famous thing that happens in Sanremo every year, the music festival takes place in February.

2:13.0

But it's now in a fairly non-descript building, a kilometer up the road.

2:19.0

Do you know, I think it actually might be in the casino this year but I stand to be corrected on that. I don't know.

2:25.0

Basically we weren't going to get down the climb and into the... I mean it's fairly chaotic. Basically Sanremo at the moment is just a traffic jam.

2:35.0

But we witnessed the moment really of the race up there on the podgeo and well if you don't want to know the result, listen away now.

2:45.0

The cycling podcast is supported by science in sport. Science in sport. Fuelled by science.

3:16.0

Well I know long gone unfortunately, well for the moment of the days when we did a tale of the tapah.

3:29.0

Can we have a cinta de la Sanremo, a summary of Sanremo please, along the lines of the old tales of the tapah?

3:38.0

Well we can. I mean for ages it felt like absolutely nothing was happening and yet my notes are copious.
