In the last episode, we learned about Jesus

as the Good Shepherd who watches over his sheep and we read of Lazarus who Jesus raised from the dead

a foreshadowing of his own death to come in the approaching days. Like Lazarus, Jesus too would be brought from death to life,

offering us new life in him. Finally, we read of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem where he tells the people that he will soon be lifted up to save them.

But they do not yet understand what this means, that Jesus, their Savior, will lay down his life to fulfill

the promise that God made to Abraham, that from Him would come many nations and they would be blessed. As we begin chapter 13 we see

Jesus serving his disciples as he washes their feet in this act of humility as the disciples eat the Passover meal, Jesus

who makes himself the least. This washing of feet was usually

reserved for those in the lowest positions, but here we see Jesus humbling himself to care for his disciples in this way.
