My name is Kristen and today we are finishing up the book of First Timothy talking about

chapters 4 through six. So we pick up

today with Paul talking to Timothy and big picture throughout these chapters. He

talks a lot about false teachers and he contrasts them with a life that is

surrendered to Christ. He starts today's chapter by telling Timothy that in later days people will leave the faith and

they'll devote themselves to the teachings of demons and deceitful spirits and

that there will be false teachers who seem really religious.

They have a bunch of rules, they may be forbid marriage, they say you shouldn't

eat kinds of foods, but their consciences are actually seared. They're not trusting in the gospel, they're trusting

in themselves. But Paul encourages Timothy to be a servant, not to these kinds of silly myths or controversies, but of Christ to be a servant of Jesus.

And Paul tells Timothy to train himself in godliness, to set his hope on God, who is the

Savior and hope for all who would believe. And even though Timothy is young,

Paul tells him to set an example for the others. He tells him to read the word of

God to grow the gifts that God has given him, keeping a close eye on his life and his doctrine. Then in chapter 5 Paul gives Timothy

instructions for the church how to treat an older man, how to treat an older

woman and a widow and he gives criteria for identifying and

caring for elders within the church. And then Paul circles back around to this idea

again of false teachers to those who teach wrong
