My name is Kristen and I'll be your host through the books of First and Second Timothy.

And as we start First Timothy today, let's start with a few background notes.

Who wrote it?

The themes, what to look out for, all that fun stuff.

So the book of First Timothy was written by the apostle Paul probably in the mid 60s a.

And it was written to Timothy.

And we see in scripture that Paul and Timothy had this really special relationship.

It says in scripture that Paul considered Timothy to be like a son to him.

And in the context of this book, Paul had thought

that it was necessary to leave Timothy behind

in the city of Ephesus because there are false teachers there.

And he was going to leave Timothy to stand for truth in that city and teach the people about the ways of

God. And here he was writing to Timothy to encourage him and instruct him in the work of

the church. And interestingly the church in Ephesus had actually started

off really well, but unfortunately had fallen prey to false teachers who had crept in and deceived the people.

And so Paul starts off the book by talking about these false teachers.

He reminds Timothy not to get caught up in debates about genealogies or myths or different doctrines,

but to preach the truths of scripture in love.

And Paul reminds Timothy that he, Paul, was saved solely by God's grace.
