Summary

Jon, Ed & Mark are joined by Flora Page KC, a leading barrister who represented wrongly accused subpostmasters in the Post Office Horizon IT scandal to talk about the future of juries - the beating heart of the UK criminal justice system, that the Government seems hellbent on destroying, deliberately. A challenge beyond politics, the right to a trial by a diverse group of your peers is an eight hundred year old tradition going back to Magna Carta, and provides the last defence against State-led authoritarianism and tyranny. An essential listen for anyone who cares about justice, we explore why axing juries won't cut the scandalous 80,000 cases court backlog, whether Labour MPs who are lawyers and supporting the legislation should be charged with professional malpractice and why the absence of a 'sunset clause' in the legislation reveals the Government's true malintent. 0:39.6

It's interesting.

0:41.5

I think it's fair to say that you get a mixed reaction on the doorstep.

0:47.1

I've only had two efforts.

0:49.0

That's always been the same for you, doesn't it, regardless of what you're talking about?

0:52.6

That's true.

0:53.4

But I've literally only had two people chase me out of their garden, so I think that's progress.

0:57.7

Well, yeah, I bet that's down on your not usual number, just average for a month, isn't it? Well, normally I don't knock on hundreds of my neighbours' doors of a Saturday afternoon, but, you know. Right. What are you getting then, as friends as we all are here, I know whenever I hear a politician on the news and they say, well, look, that's not what people are asking me on the doorstep. I know that that's basically an excuse for them to not answer that question. Well, actually nobody's asking me about that. What they are asking me is about funding for the local Lido. What are people saying to when you're buying the door and say hi, it's head.

1:29.7

Can I just ask, where, where does it, which, which nation are these politicians?

1:35.6

That's my, that's my generic bullshit politician voice.
