Summary
Talking points: friendship, masculinity,
Ryan Michler and I have been in the men's work biz for a long time, and we've seen the changes—some good, some bad—in how men are talked about and marketed to by our culture and by the wellness and therapy industries. We dig into the necessity of male friendship in the face of growing isolationism, the upcoming Men's Forge, and a whole lot more. Listen in, team.
(00:00:00) - Intro and why does it seem like men are having a harder time maintaining relationships?
(00:12:27) - On men needing social time and where modern therapy misses the mark
(00:17:56) - How are men contributing to their own isolation and loneliness?
(00:31:44) - On the importance of some confrontation in male friendships
(00:38:32) - Why men need brotherhood as well as challenge, and what to do if you want deeper friendships with other men
Ryan Michler is a husband, father, Iraqi Combat Veteran, and the Founder of Order of Man. Ryan grew up without a permanent father figure and has seen first-hand how a lack of strong, ambitious, self-sufficient men has impacted society today. He believes many of the world’s most complicated problems could be solved if men everywhere learned how to be better husbands, fathers, businessmen, and community leaders.
It has now become his life’s mission to help men across the planet step more fully into their roles as protectors, providers, and presiders over themselves, their families, their businesses, and their communities. You can find him blogging and podcasting at Order of Man where he is working to help men become all they were meant to be.

| 0:00.0 | All right, Mr. Ryan Mickler, how you doing, brother? |
| 0:02.9 | I'm good. How about you? It's good to see you. |
| 0:04.7 | Yeah, man. Welcome back to the show. It's nice to have you on. I think this is maybe a three-peat. I was wondering if I should have looked, but I was thinking it probably was at this point. So I'm honored, man, to see your growth and see what you're doing. And obviously, we're talking about similar things and similar missions. |
| 0:21.1 | It's pretty cool to be able to do this stuff together. |
| 0:23.4 | Yeah, it's pretty awesome, man. |
| 0:24.7 | And I mean, and see what you're doing. And obviously, we're talking about similar things and similar missions. |
| 0:21.3 | It's pretty cool to be able to do this stuff together. Yeah, it's pretty awesome, man. And I mean, |
| 0:25.1 | it's, it's funny because like both of our shows have been around for, man, like for ages. I think |
| 0:30.8 | my show has been around for eight or nine years almost. Yeah, March, March of this year will be |
| 0:35.7 | 10 years for me. March 15th is my 10 year anniversary. Damn, you're like podcasting. Oh, G. Yeah, I don't. And people ask me about it. They're like, oh, man, that was so good. Like, how did you do that? I'm like, I just got lucky. It wasn't, I didn't know podcasting was going to take off. I just enjoyed the medium. And here we are 10 years later. It is crazy, though. It seems like it's harder and harder to stay relevant, I guess, is maybe the term. Because everybody has a movement. Everybody has a podcast. Everybody's talking about the issues that we're talking about that guys like you and I really were the ones |
| 1:12.6 | who started, I think, in a lot of ways, bringing this discussion to the mainstream. |
| 1:17.9 | I agree. I agree. I mean, it's hard to, it's hard to make noise in the noise. You know, |
| 1:24.4 | like there's a lot of noise out there. There's so many different shows. |
| 1:28.0 | You know, there's, I think, I read some of the other days, something like 4.2 million podcasts. |
| 1:32.7 | I'm like, that's a lot. Yeah, yeah, not like podcast episodes, but like shows, you know, like 4.2 |
| 1:38.7 | million shows. It's like, oh my gosh. Well, that also includes the podcast that they did one episode or five episodes |
| 1:46.5 | and couldn't cut it. I think we're at 1,560 episodes now. So it's just people say, oh, |
| 1:54.8 | how are you successful with it? I just have done it a long time because it's not intelligence. |
| 1:59.7 | It's not looks. It's not resources. It's not connections. It's just do it over and over again like a Neanderthal with nothing better to do. Repetition, baby. That's all. That's all it is. Repetition, right? Chop wood carry water. That's it. Chop wood carry water. Well, let's dive into what we're going to talk about today. |
| 2:19.3 | You know, I think obviously for those that are out there listening, you know, Ryan, myself, Larry Hagner, a couple of other great men, Matt Vincent, were putting on an event outside of St. Louis. |
| 2:31.1 | And it's called the forge, the men's forge. And there's a bunch of different things |
| 2:35.0 | that we're going to be doing in there. But one of the things that we're really tackling is |
