This is CBSI in the world. I'm John Batchler. Democracy, as practiced by the United States,

the world's most successful and oldest democracy. It's an election frequently, and the contestants

come forward, they debate. There's a vote. It can be very close, can be recounted, but

there's a winner. And both sides agree there's going to be another election momentarily.

Another version of democracy is gaining favor around the world, and I guide myself to

Josh Rogan of the Washington Post to identify a moment in Moscow recently between the

General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping and the President of the Russian

Federation, toasting democracy. Josh, a very good evening to you. Democracy is a close

vote. Democracy is frequent elections. Democracy is transparency. How has the word democracy

been transformed by Russia and China right now? Good evening to you.

Well, good evening, John. You know, on the one hand, it's not new for dictators to claim

the trappings of elections in order to bolster their legitimacy while they consolidate power.

They're all Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi regularly held elections where they won

between 99 and 100% of the vote. But what President Putin and President Xi Jinping have done

is they've taken this idea of democracy as they define it and incorporated it into their

broader plans for what they call a new world order, which translates to a system by which

the word democracy, a system in which the word democracy doesn't no longer means that

people have any right to protest the government. No longer means that people have any right

to choose their leaders, much less influence their leaders decisions. They want to dilute

the word democracy so that they can slap it onto any banana republic and nobody will

really know the difference. And the way that they do this is by exporting it to the developing

world in the global south through massive amounts of propaganda and covert influence
