Right. Roy Hukakian lived in Iran through the revolution before arriving in the United States as a refugee when she was only 19.

She had, quote, only a backpack and little English.

Her journey began through the American immigration experience once she arrived,

and she relives that journey, sort of through a different vehicle. She has written a book called A Beginner's Guide to Coming to America for the Immigrant and the Curious. She joins me now

with her untold story. Hi, Roya. Hi, Martha.

Thank you so much for doing this.

You know, I think I just want to begin with sort of a quick recap, if possible, of the book that you wrote prior to this, the journey from the land of no, which sort of talks about your decision, you and your mother,

to have to leave your home country. Yes. You know, we take for granted that so many immigrants

who come to this country come with a suitcase and several more baggages and suitcases full of stories and histories from various

parts of the world. And that certainly applies to the journey that my mother and I made in

1985 to the United States. You know, we in 1979, when Iran underwent the massive revolution that didn't just change the country,

but practically the history of the region, as we knew it, it had to eventually flee in 1984.

We lived as refugees in Austria for nearly a year until we arrived here.
