Summary

In this episode, Jeff breaks down one of the most overlooked strategies in fantasy football: maintaining the right roster ratios. It’s not just about draft day. It’s about protecting the balance of running backs and wide receivers on your team all season long. He hits on the biggest mistakes managers make, why ratios give you a real edge, and how to keep your roster construction strong from Week 1 through the playoffs. If you want to stop blowing up your roster chasing the waiver-wire flavor of the week, this is the strategy session you need.

Rap back where you at?

Yeah, what's up?

It's Thursday, August 28th.

0:18.7

I'm Jeff.

This is the rant one week until the start of the NFL season. And I got to tell you, I appreciate all the kind words that people have been tossing at me for the podcast and how it's kind of evolved into this thing that it is right now. Because the goal was really, I wanted to do something that was unique here. I don't want to just come on and be like,

0:39.1

RB1, RB2, PPR, Titan Premium, and just do what everybody else does, right? And a lot of times I get to mix in strategy talk on the radio show or in writing, but I never really get to dive deep.

0:53.3

Well, this format has allowed me to do so. And you've

0:55.8

seen a number of the episodes over the last month and a half, two months or so, where we've

1:00.5

gotten into topics that for me, I use all the time. But for a lot of folks, you know, maybe it isn't

1:09.2

common knowledge, right? And now you're getting my perspective

1:11.9

on things. And it isn't just hero RB, zero RB. Like, you know, there was that podcast episode where I

1:18.7

talked about how to use a cheat sheet on draft day. Like, seems like it would be an obvious thing,

1:24.1

but it isn't necessarily an obvious thing to a lot of people. And if you miss

1:27.9

that one and you have a draft coming up, go back through some of these podcasts. You know they're very

1:31.6

short. You can go and listen to them. Well, anyway, preamble over. Another thing that I've noticed

1:37.9

over the years is we will set out to have a particular ratio on our roster. And I'm not worried about quarterback or tight end. If you start one of those, then I'm coming out of a draft with one of each. And I'll figure out when we get to the buy week who I'm going to play. Well, tight end I'll probably end up dropping after a few weeks like we all do. But a quarterback, I'll figure out who I play when we get to the buy week, right? We'll get to it.

2:01.9

But for our running backs and wide receivers, we go in often with a very specific ratio.

2:09.9

Now, a lot of times if it's a regular size league, you know, this year I'm coming out of it

2:14.7

in a 16 round league where I'm only rostering one tight end and one quarterback. and let's say I have a defense and a kicker because a lot of leagues will. Maybe you don't, but regardless. The point is, I'm coming out with a ratio of something like five running backs and seven wide receivers. And the reason for it is simple. In most all leagues, in any league I'm in, essentially, I have to start one more wide receiver than running back, right?

2:37.1

I have two running back spots, three wide out, and a flex.

2:40.8

Even if you have two, two, and one flex, it's still, I would prefer to have more wide receivers because I am hammering those guys earlier and it's much less likely that you're

2:51.6

going to find good options on waivers at the position, right? You can at running back. You know,
