I'm John Bettser with Ennato Levin of the Quincy Institute of Responsible Statecraft. Too many villains,

too little time. We touch on Syria because that is not a Middle East story only. That is a European

story. They're said to be nearly a million Syrian nationals in Germany. These last years,

very, very disturbing for the political like canvas because the right of center parties have risen on the basis of their anti-immigration

rhetoric, which now is underlined by new refugees applying and by a call for them to be

returned or to get out. I think it's very bluntly said.

Other places Syrians have gone or have yet to speak, but it is not a positive thing.

The Syrian Civil War is still underway, we're told.

There was fighting in the northeast between Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish-backed forces.

The U.S. is there as well.

Israel has taken the Golan in Mount Hermann and is pressing past the DMZ.

We're told there are confusing headlines everywhere.

Turkey is present but not present.

The sponsorship of the HTS, so-called, and of the Free Syrian Army,

so-called, all have Turkish army origins. And at all, we just have a few minutes. Turkey is a

member of NATO, not a member of EU. I'm told by veteran NATO military officers that it's always been a problem child.

However, right now Syria is part of what used to be called the neo-automous thinking in Ankara

to reclaim the Ottoman Empire lost in 1918.

Is that, is that imaginable that that's what's going on here?

Well, not the whole of the Ottoman Empire. No, I mean, that's vastly beyond Turkey's capability,

but greatly increased influence, yes, and greatly increased power to push back the Kurds.

And that, of course, brings Turkey into direct confrontation with America, which has very much based its influence in Syria and Iraq on the Kurds for many
