This last week has been again and again

a conversation about tariffs

with our trading partners in Europe,

with our trading adversaries in Asia, everybody calculating

that this is not good for us or this will be bad for the U.S. or what are they thinking trade

war is not for any of us.

It is my measure of the Trump administration that this is sincere, not a negotiating point.

The president-elect believes that tariffs will level the field.

He wants to reawaken the factory floor in the U.S. and its allies.

He wants to move away from the dependence upon China and the supply chain

that China can strangle.

And he means very carefully to reward the businesses that outperform in the U.S.

You're on the road all the time.

I just hear these things sitting in New England from correspondents around the world.
