To Korea, Grant Newsom, author of When China Attacks, is in Seoul, Korea for the election

within these next hours, Tuesday, June 3rd. The major candidates, as according to Gallup, are the Democratic Party, Yi Jiang, the main conservative party, Kim Moun Su, that's the People Power Party.

And the minor conservative candidate, new reform parties, Yi Jun

Suk.

The polls have indicated for some time that the Democratic Party is the presumed winner of

the presidential vote.

Behind this, of course, is the threat of North Korea, threat of China, and remarks

by the leading candidate that he is surprisingly sympathetic to the People's Republic of China

and surprisingly indifferent, even hostile to Taiwan and the United States.

Grant, a very good day to you. You're on the ground. I'm just reading Gallup Polls summaries of the matter. The vote right now is underway. The early voting has started, and

the reports from the wire services is that the voting is heavy. What are the terms here, what are the risks here, especially to the pledge of South Korea

under the previous president to defend Taiwan? Is that at risk? Good evening to you.

Good evening, John. Well, there is a lot of risk. There's even risk to the U.S. South Korea

relationship, depending on the outcome of this election.

I think it's going to be closer than the polls might indicate, and I don't know who's going to win.

But in the event, the leftist Democratic Party candidate, Li J. Mung, does prevail.

There's going to be some changes here.

These people are hardcore leftists and they are more

closely aligned, favorably disposed towards North Korea and China. They don't think much of the

United States. In the Democratic Party, you've got some hardcore Marxist radicals. Li J. Mung is one of them. He's put on a more mild

sort of front during the election. But if they take over, they will have dominant control of the
