Welcome to Dedicated. I'm your host Doug Brunt. Today it is our honor to be with Richard

Haas. I've said many times on this show that good writing is clear thinking, and Richard

Haas is a terrific example of that. He's had a distinguished career in public service for his work with

the National Security Council in developing Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He received

a Presidential Citizens Medal in 1991, later as director of policy planning for the State Department.

He was a close advisor to Secretary Colin Powell and to President George W. Bush, and a special envoy for Northern Ireland from

2001 to 2003. He received the State Department's Distinguished Service Award, and he was president

of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2003 until just this past June in 2023. He's also the

author or editor of more than a dozen books, including one called The World,

A Brief Introduction, which I am obsessed with and everyone needs to read.
