France had been keeping a close eye on the American rebellion even before fighting had broken out in the spring of 1775.

Britain, of course, had been France's traditional enemy for several centuries, and had taken

away all of the French colonies in North America when the seven years' war ended in 1763.

Many French officials saw the growing rift between Britain and her colonies as an opportunity

for France to regain the upper hand. As early as 1768, French officials sent the Baron de Calb to

America. Although he was an officer in the French army, he posed as a German businessman traveling through the

colonies to get a better feel for the level of colonial anger towards Britain's new tax policies.

Many French leaders hoped that France might eventually regain control of Canada, and possibly more,

in North America. This strategy, of course, would be dependent on the colonists

supporting this move. So, in the summer of 1775, France sent another agent to America to assess the

situation. Julienne, Alexander, A char de Bonne Val-Vullar was the younger son of a French noble

who had settled in the West Indies in the early 1770s.
