Summary

In March 1775, Virginia Delegates meet in defiance of the Royal Governor to discuss additional steps to opposed the actions of Parliament. When Patrick Henry proposes to build up the militia, opponents argue that such an action would be seen as preparing for war rather than peaceful resistance. In March 1775, Patriot leaders in Virginia met at what was called the Second Virginia Convention.

Its purpose was primarily to select delegates to go to the Second Continental Congress,

which was to meet in Philadelphia in May. Virginia's royal governor, Lord Dunmore,

had cut short earlier sessions of the Virginia legislature in order to prevent all sorts of

protests against Parliament's policies and to prevent any coordination with the Continental Congress.

Colonial leaders had to meet in these extra-legal unauthorized meetings
