Hello, and thank you for joining the American Revolution.

This week, episode 347, the Constitutional Convention's biggest fight. Last week, we covered how the Constitutional Convention spent about

1:01.7

three days, just setting up procedures and selecting the officers that would run the way the

1:07.9

convention worked. So it was really not until Wednesday, May 30th,

1:13.0

1787 that the committee of the whole finally got down to business on what they were all there to talk about.

1:19.6

Chairman Nathaniel Gorham brought the committee to order. Their first point of discussion was the

1:24.6

Virginia plan, which was introduced by Edmund Randolph, but largely

1:28.6

1:33.7

podcast, I've tried to stick to events in chronological order. I'm going to depart from that

1:39.1

slightly for the next few weeks. I want to focus on several of the constitutional debates that occurred during the

1:45.1

convention, but the delegates did not just deal with one issue and then move on to the next. Instead,

1:50.8

they debated an issue for a while, then they went on to a different one, then they came back to

1:55.0

the first one again. Since I want to focus on this important event over a few episodes,

2:00.2

I'm going to take a look at a

2:01.3

particular issue or set of issues in each episode and then cover those issues through the

2:07.0

course of the debate over the entire convention until the delegates reach their final outcome.
