Summary

The Constitutional Convention got off to a rocky start, beginning nearly two weeks after the planned start date. Not enough states showed up until then. Delegates spent the first few days electing officers for the Convention. They unanimously selected Washington to preside. They also created rules for the Convention. Finally, Virginia introduced its Virginia Plan to begin the actual debate. Blog https://blog.AmRevPodcast.com includes a complete transcript, as well as more resources related to this week's episode. This week, episode 346, the Constitutional Convention begins. Last week, we covered the events leading up to the

Constitutional Convention. This week, we will take a look at the start of the convention and how

1:02.7

the delegates set up procedures for the convention itself. As I mentioned last week, the convention

1:08.7

was supposed to begin on Monday, May 14th, 1787. Only two states

showed up on that day, so the delegates pretty much had to just sit around and wait for the

hanging out in bars or in someone's parlor,

where they could exchange ideas.

1:30.1

I guess technically there was no minimum requirement since the convention had not set any standards yet.

1:36.6

The delegates, however, did not want to look like a tiny minority was setting the rules for everyone else.

1:43.2

They informally at least accepted the requirement under the Articles of Confederation

1:47.8

that delegates from at least seven states, in other words, a majority of the 13 states, were present.

1:54.6

The delegates had to wait nearly two weeks until the New Jersey delegation finally showed up on Friday, May 25th.
