Summary

Trump and the right decided it was time to go back to work—who cares how many die—as soon as they realized that many of those dying from Coronavirus are Black and brown. This is no coincidence. This is part of the racial contract that has been a part of America since the beginning. To explore the racial aspect of the back to work movement, Danielle and Toure are joined by Adam Serwer from the Atlantic.

0:36.4

you know, he called it a hoax and then he was kind

0:39.0

of worried about it for a little while even though he was still on the nothing to see here tip

0:44.2

and then it was definitely like the cure cannot be worse than the problem we have to get back to

0:50.0

work and a lot of people started saying like you you know, that shift happened, almost the moment

0:56.5

that we started to realize, you know, statistically, that black and brown people were suffering

1:01.0

and dying from this far at far greater rates than white people. And Adam's piece really nails that

1:09.8

down in a more intelligent way than anything else I've seen.

1:14.3

And part of it you bring in this Charles Mills notion of the racial contract.

1:19.6

Can you just unpack the racial contract before we get to the beat of the piece?
