Hello, and welcome to another edition of the Byron York Show, the no-chit-chat podcast.

We'd like to get right into it, and what we're going to get into today is Republicans

against Republicans.

Now, if anything embodies the sort of Washington, D.C., Insiderdom.

The populist of both parties, not just Republican populist, democratic populist as well, that

populist of both parties hate.

It is something called the Gridiron Dinner.

Now it is an annual dinner put on by the oldest of Washington's journalistic institutions

called the Gridiron Club.

In each year, it invites politicians, sometimes the president comes, didn't come this year.

It features politicians and journalists putting on comedy routines.

Now the idea is that the comedy routines are supposed to be self-deprecating, and sometimes

they are, sometimes they're funny.

But sometimes they also, at times, come out painfully flat.

But the tradition, maybe the rule at the Gridiron Club, is that this comedy, this self-deprecating

humor, these ribbing of other people, never goes too far.

The ideas are supposed to, quote, singe, not burn.

Okay.

Now I should probably say right here that I have never attended a Gridiron dinner, and

I rely on media reports for details of them.

So the dinner because it's put on by the pillars of the journalistic establishment in Washington,

there are a lot of liberals and Democrats in the room.
