| 0:35.5 | Thanks for listening, this is Father David Nix, and I want to let you know why I pray at the beginning of these podcasts, the catechetical ones, but not the interviews. It's because I would encourage you to join me in praying this as we start the podcast, and because these deal with divine things, it's worth praying. However, when I do interviews, those can get a little bit silly, and there's no |
| 0:54.3 | need to pretend like they are under some type of divine protection. So that's why we pray on the |
| 1:00.4 | scripture ones and the catechism ones. And if you've memorized these prayers by now, I would |
| 1:04.4 | encourage you to join with me as we begin these podcasts. Okay, today's podcast is on the form of the Eucharist, and as you know, every sacrament has matter and form, and you know, we just covered the matter of the Eucharist last time, bread and wine, that becomes the body and blood, and the form for the Eucharist is the words. So today we're going to talk about the words, and the catechism reads, the form to be used in the consecration of the bread is next |
| 1:28.8 | to be treated of, not however, in order that the faithful should be taught these mysteries, |
| 1:33.2 | unless necessity require it. For this knowledge is not needful for those who have not received |
| 1:40.6 | holy orders. The purpose of this section is to guard against the most shameful |
| 1:46.1 | mistakes on the part of priests at the time of the consecration due to ignorance of the form. |
| 1:53.4 | Now, you have to remember, oh, me for the first time today, you've got to remember that the Roman |
| 1:57.1 | Catechism of Trent, again, the only infallible catechism in the history of the church, |
| 2:38.8 | this was written for priests, and it really wasn't meant to be read like I'm doing to you lay people, but a few things have changed since then, since 500 years ago. God's dogma, not being one of them, of course. First, the internet exists so we can break this up into many parts, so you don't have to just listen to the whole catechism from front to end. That would take, you know, 20 hours. Secondly, the fathers of Trent, they didn't expect this many priests, say, 500 years later, to be heretics in the future. So now it's unfortunately traditional laypeople like you all who have to babysit priests on the faith and liturgy, which is why I'm reading this part. |
| 2:45.2 | Thirdly, the novice ordo mese, that's the new mass that was invented in the 1960s. |
| 2:49.7 | That didn't exist when this catechism was written, obviously 500 years ago. |
| 2:53.6 | So when it says the faithful don't need to know the words of consecration, |
| 2:58.0 | it's because 500 years ago, first of all, no one was messing with it, |
| 3:00.7 | and secondly, the priest whispered it, so nobody heard it. |
