Hey there from CNN. I'm Krista Bow with the five things you need to know for Friday, August 22nd.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell hinted this morning that the central bank will do what President Donald Trump and investors have long been waiting for.

With policy and restrictive territory, the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.

That's Powell's very fancy way of saying, okay, fine, we might have to cut interest rate soon,

warning that the job market is weakening and may need support.

The Dow soared over 900 points into record territory this morning at the news.

But Powell also warned of a gloomier economic outlook, in part because of tariffs impact on inflation.

The effects of tariffs on consumer prices are now clearly visible.

We expect those effects to accumulate over coming months with high uncertainty about both timing and amounts.

The central bank hasn't cut rates in eight months, and the next opportunity they have to do so is next month, so it's not a done deal yet.

Powell's comments come as Trump pressures the Fed for massive cuts while reshaping its leadership.

The president said today he'll fire the embattled Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook if she doesn't step down first over allegations of potential mortgage fraud.

The FBI conducted a court-authorized search at John Bolton's home as part of a national security investigation.

That's according to two people familiar with the matter, with a source saying they are now investigating his DC office.
