Summary

Oftentimes we avoid difficult situations by simply pretending they don't exist. There is real value in taking time out to be quiet and acknowledge our current reality — whether good or bad. In doing this, we are able to gain clear vision and insight on how to maneuver through the circumstances at hand.  Radio Headspace will be back for an all-new episode featuring all-new voices and mindful moments. Make sure you share, download, and subscribe to catch the new season of Radio Headspace, starting Monday April 5, 2021.  Want more Andy. Try Headspace today. Learn more about your ad choices. Hi, it's Andy here and welcome to Radio Headspace and a Wednesday morning.

0:57.0

So this morning I was out for a run. It was bright, it was early and because everyone's still working from home or most people are working from home.

1:06.0

The roads were really quiet. I don't know if you've been out running at all or even just walking out in the streets but it's a strange time at the moment because there's people walk along the sidewalk everyone crossing the road to avoid each other and does that person have a mask on, doesn't that person and it's a bit tricky.

1:21.0

So it tends to just run in the street with the cars, it just feels a little bit easier.

1:26.0

And as I was running along I found myself running towards some traffic lights and I could see that the traffic lights were going to change to green.

1:33.0

Meaning I'd be able to just keep on running but to the corner or out the side of my vision I could see a car coming increasingly quickly to my side.

1:41.0

And as I looked at the lights that they were looking at they were red and yet the car was getting faster something okay well they're definitely going to shoot the lights.

1:49.0

So I started to slow down and as I looked into the car I saw this person who had clearly just realised that the lights were already red and yet it was way too late to do anything at all.

2:01.0

Thankfully there were no cars coming along in the other direction but as they went through the junction the person just closed their eyes and gripped the wheel.

2:13.0

On the one hand I felt for them because I could relate to that response, there's nothing you could do so you just sort of close your eyes and hope for the best.

2:22.0

And yet at the same time it was sheer lunacy because probably the one time we want to ensure that our eyes are open is in a really critical dangerous situation where we might need to take some kind of action, evasive action perhaps.

2:37.0

And I thought it was just such a great metaphor for life how so often we find ourselves not necessarily in dangerous situations but in difficult uncomfortable in convenient situations where internally we try and just shut everything out maybe we ignore it maybe we pretend it's not happening maybe we try and tell ourselves even a different story that perhaps covers it up quite and it down makes it feel like it's not really happening.

3:04.0

And yet of course those stories don't change the reality of the situation the reality is what it is and regardless of how difficult it is how painful it might be how inconvenient it might be.

3:16.0

At some point we're probably going to have to address that and sometimes it might just be timing we might be playing for time until we feel able to process that to cope with it.
