Hey there, hope you're having a great Friday so far. A few weeks ago or months ago, the time's

0:05.7

running together. Someone asked me, I think it was on Instagram, she had seen a picture maybe of

0:10.4

my companion planting, and she asked, how close can you plant companion plants together?

0:17.6

And it was a really hard question to answer. If you have been gardening for a while, you know that that's kind of a loaded question because

0:24.0

I hate to even say this, but the answer is it depends.

0:27.9

But as I thought about her question, I thought that's really a good question and one that

0:32.4

beginners should be asking because plant spacing is something that's important when you're

0:37.2

planning your garden. And important when you're planning your

0:37.8

garden. And so when you're throwing in companion planting, it's kind of hard to know how to know

0:44.0

how far to plant these plants apart from one another. You could go with a conservative approach

0:50.5

with a numerical formula. I've seen this online where you could look at the plant spacing

0:56.0

requirements of a particular crop like tomatoes, for example, and then you could look at the

1:01.9

plant spacing recommendations for the companion crop, and then you could take whatever those

1:07.7

plant spacing recommendations are and just plant the crops at that spacing.

1:12.8

So let's say tomatoes, maybe you find out that it's 30 inches

1:16.0

and then basil, you find out that it's 18 inches.

1:20.7

Well, those two aren't the same.

1:22.2

So some places will say that you can split the difference

1:24.6

and just plant them whatever 30 plus 18 divided by 2 is 24.

1:30.3

Maybe I did that math right.

1:31.7

Anyway, so you could do that like tomatoes and basil 24 inches apart.

1:36.5

Honestly, I think that that waste space, it would be a good place to start.
