Summary

Anxiety and OCD can abruptly put the brakes on our children’s education. This is one of the most disruptive and concerning aspects of our children’s OCD or anxiety. It is a slippery slope that can gain momentum and get out of control rather quickly.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I explore how to identify the core fear around school refusal, how to decipher if it is a school issue versus an anxiety or OCD issue, and how to navigate the issue without making school avoidance worse.

about something that so many of us struggle with, and that is the school avoidance,

0:36.0

school refusal that kids with anxiety and OCD often have.

0:41.5

And we call it school refusal, but I actually see it as school avoidance because I don't think

0:46.5

our kids want to refuse school. I think anxiety and OCD just makes it so overwhelming that it

0:52.7

becomes this battleground that becomes a huge issue.

0:59.3

Because when we can't get our kids to do some basic things like get an education,

1:03.6

we get into crisis mode really quickly.

notes. I also want to let you know that I have a therapeutic

1:47.8

OCD card deck. And so if you have kids that are struggling and they need to build those OCD

skills, it's a muscle and it has to be worked out every day. And just surviving OCD is not working on that muscle. That's just survival.
