Summary

How do we help our children with OCD have a better quality of life? Our child’s OCD is more than just Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) therapy. It is more than just their intrusive thoughts and their compulsions.

How do we help them with self-esteem? The feeling of guilt and shame? The struggles of navigating school and family relationships?

In Dr. Jonathan Abramowitz’s new book, Living Well with OCD, he tackles the bigger question - how can people live a fulfilling life with OCD?

Jonathan Abramowitz is a psychologist with a private practice in North Carolina. He is also the Professor and Associated Chair of Psychology at the University of North Carolina (UNC).

In this week’s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Dr. Abramowitz to share his insights on how we can help our kids live a fulfilling life, despite OCD.

1:11.7

And I've always enjoyed listening to him talk about OCD and his methods, his thoughts around it, because he's very articulate.

1:21.5

And I feel like he simplifies things.

1:23.3

And I always love people who have really solid clinical sound advice.

And he's got the gift of that.

1:31.8

He has a new book out called Living Well with OCD, which is a book that is targeted for adults with OCD.

1:39.5

But I read it and it's a fantastic read for parents too, even though it's not geared towards parents.

1:44.4

It's geared towards the sufferer. but I feel like it is a really helpful roadmap of the different

1:51.2

areas that we need to navigate as parents helping our kids, teens and young adults with OCD.

1:56.7

I also think it's a fantastic book to recommend to our older teens and young adults because

it is an easy read and it does encompass so much more than ERP exposure response prevention.
