Summary

How many times have you heard people say things like,“you just coddle him too much” or “you just need to be tougher with her!” Some other oldies but goodies are, “She doesn’t act that way for me” and “he’ll grow out of it. Don’t worry.” Sometimes explaining anxiety to people who don’t get it can make your head spin. Trust me, I get it. I have bitten my tongue so many times - I have callouses. What about if those people are your other kids? What if you hear things like, "Why do you treat him like that?" or "If that was me I would totally get in trouble!" How can you explain anxiety to your other children so they can "get" their anxious sibling and maybe even help and not hurt the situation? ***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Visit my website at www.ATparentingSurvival.comInterested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? Here's your host, Child Therapist Natasha Daniels.

Welcome to another episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast. Today I want to talk to you about

0:18.3

how to explain anxiety to people who don't get it. That can be highly frustrating. And if you eat, live, and

0:27.0

and breathe anxiety like I do, when you come across somebody who doesn't understand

0:31.8

anxiety, that can almost be baffling or insulting.

0:35.4

But we have to take a step back and realize that not everyone is going to

0:39.9

understand anxiety like we do because they're not living it. They're not

0:44.9

reading about it and so the general population's understanding of anxiety is

0:49.5

pretty scary and there's a lot of assumptions and a lot of incorrect misperceptions.

0:55.6

And besides the people who are outside of the home, we have to deal with the people inside

1:00.0

of our home.

1:01.1

So we have to talk about their siblings. You know the other kids in our home who don't

1:05.1

understand why our kid is having such a hard time when they're not. And we also have partners who sometimes

1:12.4

don't fully understand anxiety and we need to help them understand it as well.

1:17.0

Maybe they're not in the line of fire. Maybe they go to work all day and they only come home at night, they spend a couple of hours with their

1:24.4

child and they don't see it.

1:26.3

Or vice versa.

1:27.3

Maybe you're not home all day, but you understand anxiety and your partner is home all day

1:32.0

with your child and it's frustrating because they don't seem to understand anxiety.

1:37.0

Now if you have a partner who is not understanding anxiety but on top of that they don't believe anxiety exists

1:45.2

that is a bit different and I did a whole episode on partners who don't believe in
