Today, stuff like superhero, science fiction, fantasy, and adventure are not only big

business, they are 100% mainstream.

However, when I was growing up, they were all considered kid stuff and Hollywood believed

that while thrilling action sequences, big stunts, and crazy special effects could be a lot

of fun, it weren't really part of a serious film.

Now with 22 movies under their belt, the team behind James Bond certainly knew a thing

or two about filming great action, but the tone of it wasn't exactly serious.

Of course, all that change when Daniel Craig became 007 in Casino Royale, a dark, gritty film

that harkened back not only to the bond of Sean Connery, but to the even darker and

grittier novels by Ian Fleming.

Still, Craig and the Bond team believed they could go even deeper, with an unlikely director

at the helm.

Sam Mendez of American Beauty, wrote to Tradition, Jarhead, and Revolutionary Road, was known

for the intimacy and intensity of a storytelling, but he's not exactly the guy you think of for

the world's most famous Super Spy.

Still, it's the combination of the fantastic action sequences we've come to expect from Bond,

along with a subtlety of character and incredible performances, particularly from Craig and

the Great Judy Denches, that elevates Skyfall from Great Bond movie to simply great movie.
