Good evening and welcome to the sleepy bookshelf. This season, which is exclusively for our

treasured premium listeners, we are reading the first part of The Chronicles of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery.

Lucy Maud Montgomery, O.B.E. was a Canadian author best known for her collection of novels,

essays, short stories, and poetry beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables.

She published 20 novels, 500 poems, 30 essays, and 530 short stories.

And if you have been with us for some time,

you will know that we have already read some of these on the sleepy bookshelf.

Most of her work is set on Prince Edward Island off the coast of Canada,

and her writing has made these locations popular tourist landmarks,

namely Green Gables, which has since formed the genesis of the Prince Edward Island National Park.

The following is just a preview to give you an idea of what to expect from this season.

The Chronicles of Avonlea are a collection of short stories related to the Anne of Green

Gables series and was first published in 1912.

The hero of the novels Anne Shirley only plays a minor role in the book, in the hurrying of Ludovic, and in a supporting

role in the courting of Prissy Strong. She is otherwise only briefly mentioned in passing.

In this, part one of the series, we will read the hurrying of Ludovic, in which Anne Shirley

helps along Ludovic Speed's proposal to Theodora Dix after a very long courtship.

And Old Lady Lloyd, in which a rich old lady comes upon the daughter of her former beau and tries to help her.
