Wild Apples is one of Henry David Theroux's most lyrical essays which chronicles the history

of wild apple trees from ancient Greece to America in the 1800s. He describes the flavors

and sense of different apples, the way the plants transform throughout the year and the

animals and insects that eat them. It was first published in the magazine The Atlantic

Monthly in 1862. While all of the other works on the sleepy bookshelf are fiction to date,

we thought it might be nice to bring you this essay which reflects the beauty of the natural

world in autumn. It's a special treat as we begin November, my favourite month of the year.
