This season we'll be reading the famous British science fiction novella, The Time Machine

by H.G. Wells.

The Time Machine was first published in 1895 along with the War of the Worlds, The Invisible

Man and the Island of Doctor Moro.

This book remains one of H.G. Wells' most popular science fiction works today.

Wells wrote the novella or short novel during the Victorian period.

It follows a man who travels through time to the distant future where humanity has been

divided into two distinct groups, those who live a seemingly carefree existence above

ground and those who live and labour below.

Many contemporary literary analysis of the book see it as a commentary on and warning

about growing class divides and inequality in Victorian England.

The Time Machine has dreamy descriptions of a crumbling, yet beautiful future air,

but it doesn't shy away from the darker consequences of such a divided society.
