This is John Batchel, a conversation on Hotel Mars with Harold Connolly,

0:05.5

mission sample scientist for two probes of asteroids, returning samples, Ryugu and Benu.

0:14.8

Here we speak of Benu and why it is that the carbonaceous chondritic material is not commonplace on the samples we have on earth.

0:25.4

And the way to solve that was to go to Banu and take a sample, looking for what is generally understood as prebiotic life,

0:34.2

that is the conditions that are conducive to life creation as we understand it.

0:40.5

Heat, water, and rock for food in an asteroid.

0:46.6

Possible.

0:48.1

Here's Harold Connolly to explain why the population of really good asteroids is not commonplace on Earth.

0:55.7

In Antarctica, for example,

0:57.2

where we find a lot of meteorites

0:58.9

plunged into the ice

1:00.5

for tens of thousands of years.

1:04.6

More of this later tonight on Hotel Mars.

1:07.6

Yeah, that's a great question.

1:08.8

So Benu, like Rugu,

1:15.6

is a carbonaceous, conritic-like asteroid. And those are clearly underrepresented in our collections here on Earth.

1:20.6

We have carbonaceous asteroid parts or bits, which we call meteorites.

1:26.6

But in the asteroid asteroid itself, they are

1:30.4

underrepresented. And we now know that the material most likely doesn't survive very well

1:36.2

going through our atmosphere from these two missions of Cyrus-Rex and High Abusa-2.

1:41.0

And therefore, that may be another reason why they're underrepresented on Earth.

1:45.3

There are other kinds of chondrites and meteorites that we find on Earth and more abundance.
