These two films, Sydney Lumet's Fail Safe and John Frankenheimer's Seven Days in May, have come up many times in our conversations on The Cine-Files and since they are both Cold War Thrillers that came out in 1964 we thought it was only natural to discuss both of them on our upcoming live show.
But here is the twist...
Steve has never seen Fail Safe, which John loves and John has never seen Seven Days in May which Steve Loves. Which Cold War Thriller will come out on top? You'll have to tune in to find out.

0:00.0 | Hi, this is Steve. Even the most dedicated cinephile has a few holes in their movie |
0:05.5 | watching resume, and John and I are no exception. While we both love film, there are, and probably |
0:11.1 | always will be, great movies that we just haven't seen. However, there are two films that |
0:16.2 | have come up not once, but many times in our conversations on the cinephiles. One is John |
0:21.1 | Frankenheimer's Seven Days in May, which I've always loved, but John has never seen, |
0:26.2 | and the other is Sidney Lumet's Failsafe, one of John's absolute favorites that I've |
0:32.0 | always managed to miss. Strangely enough, these are both black and white political thrillers |
0:37.5 | set during the Cold War, and both movies came out in 1964. To make matters even stranger, |
0:44.2 | strange being the operative word here, 1964 is also the year that another black and white |
0:49.5 | Cold War film came out that we've covered on the cinephiles, which is Stanley Kubrick's |
0:54.0 | Doctor Strange Love, which should give us an idea of how people were feeling about |
0:58.7 | the world in the mid-60s. The fact is, these movies have so much in common that it just |
1:03.0 | made sense to cover them together, so that's exactly what we're going to do. This Sunday, |
1:08.2 | February 5th, at 3pm Pacific Time, on our live show. Now, since I haven't seen Failsafe, |
1:14.0 | my next stop is cinephiles.net, where I can buy or stream it along with Seven Days in |
1:19.1 | May, and every other film we've ever reviewed. And, if you happen to support the show on |
1:24.2 | patreon.com slash the cinephiles, right now, you could be listening to John and I discuss |
1:30.0 | this year's Oscar nominations. So that's Oscar Noms on Patreon and a double feature of Failsafe |
1:36.2 | and Seven Days in May live this Sunday at 3pm Pacific on our YouTube channel. |
