| 0:00.0 | This is John Batchel, a conversation with colleague Elizabeth Peake about the Chinese economy |
| 0:05.2 | and the bluster that we have from Xi Jinping himself regarding the standoff over tariffs as a joke |
| 0:14.1 | from his point of view. It is not a joke. China's economy is very weak, very, very weak. |
| 0:22.1 | And Elizabeth Peake comments on that. |
| 0:24.7 | And the weak economy cannot withstand the strains of the tariff confrontation is the thinking. |
| 0:31.6 | Is Elizabeth Peek more of this tonight? |
| 0:33.5 | Well, I think that's true. |
| 0:35.7 | And I think President Xi, if you remember, several years ago, |

| 0:45.3 | country's problem. But you're quite right. For years, the five-year long-term plan in China |
| 0:50.3 | has relied on two things, boosting consumerism, which has not happened, and also attracting |
| 0:56.5 | foreign capital, which also has not happened. In fact, foreign investment has been flooding out of |
| 1:01.7 | China because of Xi's erratic management. So I think they are not in good shape. I think what |
| 1:08.5 | he's doing now, playing tit for tat, |
| 1:11.6 | refusing Boeing airplanes, cutting off rare earths, |
| 1:15.4 | this is not going to end well for China. |
| 1:17.4 | I don't believe. |
| 1:18.5 | I don't believe our White House is going to buckle |
| 1:21.9 | vis-a-vis China because we have a stronger hand. |
| 1:26.2 | And the sooner China realizes that, the better. |
