This is John Batchel, a conversation with colleague Judy Dempsey in Berlin for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

about the new coalition government forming behind Friedrich Meritz with a man named Pistorius as defense minister, hawkish to Pistorius.

The decision indicated that unlike the previous coalition headed by Olaf Schultz,

Mr. Merz-Hermerz will send Taurus missile, cruise missiles to Ukraine

and will support Ukraine in a fashion that was never entirely clear from the previous government.

He certainly turned the page as the would-be leader of Germany.

Now, his designated defence minister is the current defence minister, Boris Pistorius,

who's been absolutely so hawkish with regard to Ukraine.

And he said it's not certain that the terrorist missiles should be delivered.

Maybe he's doing this to just get his social democratic party on board.

But certainly it's a new change of language.

If Mercer is serious about this and if he can deliver and the weapons are there.

And what happened in Sumi at the weekend,

the fact that Germany was so quick to react and many of the European countries except the United States blaming Ukraine for starting this war, I think Europeans realize actually, it beholds them to actually defend Ukraine more and more because they know exactly that Putin is not going to come to the negotiation table.
